Root Canal Treatment Can Relieve Painful Tooth

Root canal treatment is a dental procedure known as being the “final attempt” to save your natural tooth from being extracted. Many patients are relieved to learn the treatment is not too different from the experience of having a cavity filled.

If you have any questions about getting a root canal treatment or are anxious about the procedure, our friendly team is here to answer them and help ease your nerves, helping make you feel comfortable in our care.

What Is a Root Canal?

Root canal treatment is a dental procedure that helps restore or save a tooth that has become irreversibly inflamed or infected.

A damaged tooth or deep tooth decay can lead to infection of the pulp inside the tooth, which can result in the need for root canal treatment.

During a typical root canal treatment, the dentist will anesthetize (numb) the area before removing the pulp from inside the tooth. The dentist will then fill and seal the tooth and may place a crown to further protect the tooth.

Why You Might Require Root Canal Therapy

If your dentist detects signs of infection or inflammation of the pulp inside a tooth during an exam, they may recommend root canal treatment as a way to fix the pain caused by the infection while preserving your tooth.

Common signs and symptoms of a tooth requiring root canal treatment:

  • Persistent tooth pain
  • Hypersensitivity to temperature (especially hot)
  • Tooth discolouration
  • Appearance of a localized raised swelling on the gum tissue, known as an abscess
  • A cracked tooth
  • A loosened tooth

While in some cases, tooth extraction might be warranted, we typically recommend taking action to save the tooth if at all possible. Removing a tooth can lead to the need for additional, more complex dental procedures.
